Emergencies can happen at any time and itβs wise to be prepared. Long term food storage is not just for the military and doomsday preppers. Everyone should be prepared to care for yourself and your family in times of natural disasters or national crisis.
In light of this, I have been doing a lot of research and comparing companies that sell freeze-dried and dehydrated foods as we prepare to start our off-grid homestead. In this article I’ll share my research with you and provide a chart that compares these companies. I hope you find it helpful.
1. My Patriot Supply
Your All American Long Term Food Storage SOLUTION
My Patriot Supply focuses on helping Americans be prepared for emergencies. It seems like they have thought of just about everything including the coffee! Ammo cans are sold for short-term emergencies. They stand apart from most long term food storage companies because they promise 2,000 + calories in each meal. Their black and white packaging is very classy looking with their Ready Hour logo.
When you shop on their website you will see the option to buy not only long term food storage but other emergency preparedness items such as water filtration systems, First Aid Kits, and Heirloom Seeds.
Pros
- Military Discounts. Because My Patriot Supply is dedicated to serving Americans when you apply for a military discount you will receive a verification code to get a 10% discount on your order.
- Guaranteed 2-Day Delivery. My Patriot Supply offers guaranteed 2-Day delivery on all survival supplies.
- Sizes. They offer a variety of food storage sizes including Pouches, Cases, Kits, Buckets, Ammo Cans, and # 10 Cans thus increasing your purchasing options.
- Coffee. They didnβt forget the survival coffee as most companies have!
- Cases. You can purchase cases of meat, vegetables, creamer, sugar, etc. which include multiple resealable pouches inside a soft case therefore minimizing waste.
- No Refrigeration. #10 can bulk size requires no refrigeration after opening. Unopened they have a shelf life of 25 years. Up to 1-year shelf-life after opening.
- Shelf Life. Scrambled Eggs Case Pack. Up to 10-year shelf-life unopened. Up to 1-year shelf-life after opening.
- Shelf Life. Real Meat and Protein Pack Kit. Up to 30 year shelf-life unopened.
- Shelf Life. Veggie Case Pack Kit. Up to 25-year shelf-life unopened. Up to 1-year shelf-life after opening.
Cons
- Big Commitment. They donβt offer much in terms of getting your feet wet. For that reason, you will have to spend at least $25 on their 72-hour sample pack containing 16 servings in order to try My Patriot Supply. You canβt just buy one pouch in order to try out a flavor.
- No bug-out bag. They donβt sell an emergency kit that you can throw on your back if you have to leave in a hurry. Therefore, in case of an emergency you would need to throw one of their Buckets or Ammo Cans into your car or shopping cart.
- Preparation. You donβt prepare the dishes directly in the Mylar pouches consequently meal preparation involves more clean up. You add the meal to the boiling water and then simmer or boil your meal in your pot.
Take a look at the chart below to see how My Patriot Supply compares with other Survival Food Companies.
2. NuManna
Your All Organic Long Term Food Storage SOLUTION
NuManna was started in 2011. They focus on producing products that are high-quality and free of MSG and GMOs. They offer a variety of Organic products consequently setting them apart from most other long term food storage companies. Their products include Grab-n-Gos, Family Packs, Defender Packs, and Combo Packs. NuManna has a very clean simple looking style with white buckets and silver Mylar pouches.
Pros
- Easy to read nutritional information. NuManna has made available the nutritional information for their products as a result the consumer can make an educated purchase.
- Packaging. Ziplocked and heat sealed packaging therefore ensuring a quality product.
- NO MSG or GMOs. NuManna produces high quality meals free of MSG and GMOs.
- Shelf Life. Their products have a shelf life 25 years.
- Heirloom Seeds. NuManna sells 14 different varieties of Heirloom Seeds so you can start your garden at any time. Their varieties include Organic Snap Peas to Organic Non GMO corn.

Cons
- No Free Samples. As a result you will need to spend $20 on their Sample Pack of four (4) of NuManna’s most popular meals to give them a try.
- Preparation. You donβt prepare the dishes directly in the Mylar pouches consequently increasing meal prep time and clean up. You add the meal to the boiling water and then simmer or boil your meal.
- Pictures. Except for the Sample Pack are no pictures on their website of the actual contents of the pouches or prepared meals thus you can’t see if they look appealing or not.
3. Thrive Life
Your Vegetable and Meat Long Term Food Storage SOLUTION
Thrive Life is different than other long term food storage companies in that they focus more on the ingredients rather than the meal. You can buy meat, vegetables, fruit, dairy, cereals and grains and create their recipes or your own. They do the best job I have seen on the market in offering a great choice of freeze dried vegetables so that in emergencies you won’t be lacking in essential nutrients.
Pros
- Freeze Dried Pork Products. Most long term food storage companies donβt offer freeze dried pork, but with Thrive Life you can buy ham dices, pulled pork, and sausage crumbles in #10 cans. This is important because during times of crisis protein sources are often scarce.
- Vegetables. Thrive Life offers the largest variety of freeze dried vegetables that I have seen sold in #10 cans. Asparagus, Broccoli, Kale, Red Bell Peppers, Zucchini and more. You can consume Thrive Life vegetables meanwhile waiting for your own garden to grow.
- Shelf Life. Their #10 cans have a shelf life of 25 years before opening which certainly is important during periods of drought.
- Recipes. Thrive Life provides recipes for you using their ingredients which can help the beginner chef.
Cons
- No easy stacking. Their #10 cans cannot be easily stacked, consequently can take up a lot of storage space. But, they do offer a solution by selling a variety of shelving options.
- No Bulk Purchase Option. They have a subscription service or you can add large amounts to your cart as a result shopping for bulk supplies can become tedious.
- No Bug Out Bag or Emergency First Aid options. Thrive Life does not cater to preppers or emergency preparedness. They focus on simplicity in the kitchen and wasting less food and time by eliminating having to go to the grocery store so often.
4. Augason Farms
Your Most Cost Effective Long Term Food Storage SOLUTION
Started in 1972 by Phil Augason, Augason Farms products can now be found in Walmart, Associated Foods, WinCo, Samβs Club, Costco, and other places. Their first product was Morning Mooβs Milk, which is their number one selling instant milk. They focus heavily on producing food supplies for long term storage in case of emergencies.
After doing my own price comparison, I found that when compared to other Long Term Food Storage Companies Augason Farms is the most cost effective. See my comparison chart at the bottom of this article for more details.
Pros
- Free Shipping. They offer free shipping on many of the 6 month and 1 Year Food Supply Kits.
- Meal Extenders. Long grain white rice, quick rolled oats and pinto beans are sold in four gallon pails. You can add these to your meals thus extending your 30 day food supply to 90 days.
- Accessibility. Augason Farms products are sold in many places therefore making them accessible to the consumer. You will find them sold in Walmart, Associated Foods, WinCo, Samβs Club and Costco, just to name a few. Amazon also carries Augason Farm products.
- Square Pails. They sell square pails which are much easier to stack and donβt waste as much storage space as round pails do.
- Bundles. They offer #10 Can and Pail Bundles which makes your shopping experience a whole lot easier.
- Recipes. Augason Farms provides recipes on all of their #10 Can labels thus giving you meal options. They also frequently post recipes on their social media accounts for you to access.
- Shelf Life. For most products the shelf life is up to 30-years. For Baking Mixes and Eggs shelf life is 5-10 years on unopened cans.
- Variety of Sizes. They offer Emergency Supplies from 72-hours to 1-Year Kits so you have a lot of options.
- Drink and Soup Mixes. Sold in #10 Cans they carry a variety of drink and soup mixes such as Orange and Apple Delight Drink Mix, Hearty Vegetable Soup Mix, and Southwest Chili Soup Mix.
- Prepper Supplies. You can add to your order different helpful survival supplies such as First Aid Kits, Hand Wheat Grinder, Fire Starter Kit, and Emergency Candles thus completing your prepper goals.
Cons
- Cooking stove required. Unlike many of the other long term food storage options with Augason Farms you will need to add ingredients to boiling water, reduce heat and continue cooking for 15-18 minutes thereby increasing meal preparation time and clean up.
- Lack of meat. A lot of people report that the meal options that contain beef or chicken don’t contain enough of it so you might be a bit disappointed in those meals.
- No Samples. Augason Farms doesn’t offer any free samples so you are going to have to fork out a bit of money to give them a try. You can buy their 72-hour 1 Person Emergency Food Pail for $30 in order to get a taste of their products.
- Bucket lid opener. AKA βbung wrenchβ is not included with your pail. Augason Farms suggests that you store at least one bung wrench next to your food storage pails so they can be quickly opened in an emergency.
- Pouches. Their pouches are not resealable thus increasing the possibility for waste if the food isn’t used all at one time.
5. Wise Company
Your Emergency Preparedness Long Term Food SOLUTION
Wise Company (ReadyWise) is uniquely different from other companies in that they combine freeze-dried and dehydrated technologies in their ingredients. The Wise Company sells Grab-and-Go Food Kits for daily-use, such as camping and hiking, but mostly caters to Emergency Kits for individuals, couples, and families. In addition to long-term food storage, they also offer survival packs, emergency supplies, auto kits including jumper cables, and emergency pet kits for dogs and cats.

- Emergency Supplies. In addition to long-term food storage kits they also make it very convenient to purchase other emergency supplies. They sell Solar Panels, Portable Solar Generator, Water Filters and Storage Containers, Heirloom Seeds, First Aid Kits, and small stoves for cooking thus eliminating hectic shopping on your part.
- Shelf Life. Wise Company’s freeze-dried and dehydrated foods will last up to 25 years or longer.
Cons
- Limited Accessibility. You can purchase some of their products on Amazon, but are limited on where to find a dealer near you.
- No Individual Pouches. While you can request a free sample, they donβt offer individual pouches. You must purchase a box or case minimum, which includes six pouches or a complete kit. You can purchase a Favorites Sample for $20, which includes 4 of their customers favorite survival food entrees. Because of this it makes it difficult to know if you like the product before buying a larger supply.
- Pouches. Their pouches are not resealable thus increasing the possibility for waste if the food isn’t used all at one time.
- Preparation. With Wise Company you do not add water directly to your Mylar Pouch. Instead you will need a fire and pot or pan to cook your food in thus increasing preparation and clean up time.
Take a look at the chart below to see how Wise Company compares with other Survival Food Companies.

Cons
- No measuring device. There is no line inside the Pouches to show how much water you need to add so you must remember to bring your own measuring cup or a bottle with markings on it.
- Not a lot of Gluten Free options. If you are looking for Gluten Free freeze-dried foods you might be disappointed with Mountain House. Some Gluten Free options they have include: Italian Style Pepper Steak, Chicken Fajita Bowl, Mexican Rice and Chicken, Scrambled Eggs with Bacon, Scrambled Eggs with Ham and Peppers, Chicken Fajita Bowl, Italian Pepper Steak, Mexican Style Rice, Chicken Spicy Southwest Breakfast Hash.

A 24 serving assorted sides sample pack costs $42. So you’re going to have to spend a good amount to get a feel for the taste of their products.
- Pouches. The Bulk pouches are resealable, but all other pouches are not. You will need to use the contents relatively quickly so as to avoid waste.
8. Backpacker’s Pantry
Your Recycling Champion Long Term Food SOLUTION
Inspired by a group of Girl Scouts on a hike, Backpacker’s Pantry has been in the thought process since 1951. They are based in Boulder, Colorado where they produce and ship their products. While they do offer some #10 Cans for emergency food supplies, their main focus is on outdoor activities such as hiking, hunting, camping, and backpacking.

Keepsm:)ing!
We have a considerable amount of the old Wise emergency buckets some of which are approaching 13 years old while others are much newer. How is the best way- other than sampling- to tell if the older buckets are still good$
Hi Robert! In their FAQ ReadyWise says, βStudies have proven that freeze-dried and dehydrated foods will last up to 25 years or even longerβ. So I would guess that if theyβve been kept in a cool climate and nothing has broken the seal that you should be good! Hope that helps.
Hello,
I would like to know which one truly tastes better. I know itβs your opinion, I wish others could chime in.
Hi Cindy! I totally understand your question. I really do think it’s personal opinion. I like Thrive Life because it’s just ingredients, not meals. I’ll let others give their opinions and maybe that will help you.
I’m still really frustrated looking for organic, no sugar, long-term storage without all sorts of crap in it. Where do I find it?
In my opinion Thrive Life is a good option for you. Just ingredients.
Thank you for putting all of this information on one website. I know there are numerous companies to choose from and it is very helpful to see someone else’s opinions on the subject. I have used mountain house for years for backpacking trips because it is sold individually in many outfitting shops and have also used MyPatriotSupply for longer term storage. I think I will try a couple of other options from your list. Stay safe and God bless.
That’s great! I’m so happy that this article was helpful to you. Thank you for leaving your comment.
Do any of these types of survival food companys offer a pick n choose option to fill orders? Some foods can’t eat due to health problems.
Look into Thrive Life. They sell cans of ingredients, not meals.
Thank you for this informative list! We previously used Thrive LIfe but they are nearly always out of stock on the majority of their foods, so we are looking for a better resource and this helps a lot. Thank you!
Wonderful, concise, and very informational. Thank you so very much for providing such an unbiased and honest review of what is out there. I have been searching for info all over the net in order to make good decisions and Finally…
Thank you again for taking the time and hours of research to share with us. The best to you and your family.
Absolutely! You are welcome. Thank you for leaving a nice comment. I’m so happy you found my article helpful to your family. π
Hi All,
This is my first time, which company is better for emergency food?
Thank you
Jessica
Hi, this is really a matter of opinion. If you want whole ingredients I would look at Thrive Life. If you want meals there are lots of options for you. All of the companies are unique in some way. Hopefully this article will help narrow it down for you.
hi julie thanks for speaking about GOD. good help good info . MAY GOD BLESS century fl
Any keto friendly options out there?
Hi Gunny! I would definitely recommend Thrive Life for your Keto friendly option. This gives you the flexibility to create your own keto-friendly recipes from clean Thrive Life ingredients. Hope this helps. π
Thrive Life is a great option for you!
Are you familiar with Emergency Essentials? They appear to be very good offering their brand as well as others. Their sale items are very reasonable.
Would love to see you rate this company as well. Thank you.
Hi Renee! No, I’m sorry. I’m not familiar with that company.
Hi Julie. We are doing something similar to you and your family I think, just at a later stage of live. Lol our 3 kids are grown and we are slowly building a 40 acre home stead. So far we have chickens, turkeys and rabbits and of course plenty of deer. We have three gardens but the weather has been odd of late and so I have been searching for dried veggies in a bulk purchase but also in smaller sealed bags since there are only two of us. Unless all hits the fan then the kids will come home. Yikes! Anyway just wondering if you have any suggestions on where I might find just the basics and not elaborate kits? We can when we βcan β ( wow that came out odd) but we are uncertain at this time about how this seasonβs crop might come about. So researching alternative ideas. At least we have water in abundance since we have natural springs here at the olβfarm. Thank you for your previous information and any that may follow!
Hi Elizabeth. Thanks for your comment! I’m sorry, but I don’t have any good suggestions except for Thrive Life. Let me know if you come up with any other ideas! π
In addition to #10 sized cans Thrive sells pantry sized cans of freeze dried fruits, vegetables, some grains, cheeses, meats, other basics baking mixes and dairy which would be perfect for 2 people.
Great job of comparison of many companies, perfect for someone just getting started. My only comment is Augason Farms is not made in the USA, although I believe that most of them are (My Patriot, Mountain House, Legacy Food, BackPackers Pantry) but not sure about the other ones. That might be info to add to this article as that is important to some of us. Thanks again, I really found this helpful. Stay healthy!
Thanks Leslie. I’m glad you found the article helpful. Thanks for the suggestion as well. π
you left out a really good company that actually is american made, that last 25 years and donates to military veterans. it is 4Patriots,they have great food and decent prices.
Thanks Colin!
Hi I’m a military vet and looking for some advise between Patriot and Augason, both are very tempting but I’m not sure wish way I sould go for.
We are 4 in our fam and I’ll like to keep them well feed and safe.
Hello! My Patriot Supply offers military discounts so you may find that that helps you make the decision. π
Prior service myself, so I know you have eaten all kinds of stuff from around the world and I still keep MREs around, but for long term food i would suggest you get some from each company and find the one you personally like best, this is a great list, but there are some I will not buy again because of taste and preparation, spend your hard earned money on what you like.
There was a company that came to our church and gave us samples to try.
It was freezed dried fruits and vegetables reconstituted. Tasted like trash .
We were going to buy some of it then lost the name and contact information. I think they were from California, not even sure of that.
Are you able to help me out? There are so many different companies now
Thank You,
Kate
Hi Katie, not sure I can help you out, but you might want to consider trying one of these that has a better taste than trash. π
Of all the companies, which one is the healthiest and most nutritious??
Hi Colleen! Since there are so many different allergies and dietary needs these days, I really can’t give a good answer. I would recommend that you go to each of the companies websites and read the nutrition labels. Sorry I can’t be more specific.
Hi .. Terima kasih.
Kebanyakan tidak dijual di Indonesia. Maaf, ya. π
Thank you so much for providing an experienced overview of these food companies. I respect your opinion and researching these on my own was getting challenging. Awesome job. Thank you
Dan
You are very welcome Dan. I really and truly appreciate your kind comment and your appreciation for my research.
Julie,
Great info going to order some items this week. Do you have a webpage were one can get other info on survival food, gear etc.
Thanks
Thanks Keith. No, we don’t manage any other websites besides this one. Sorry.
Julie,
Thank you for all the information AND breakdown… I just started prepping thanks to this darn fear mongering virus. I’m trying not to freak. your information was so easy to understand, I dont feel overwhelmed.
Stay safe π
Gen
You’re very welcome Gen! You’re so right, don’t panic, just prepare responsibly. π
GREAT job Julie! Thank you for taking the time. Just, for the life of me, CAN’T figure out why not one of these companies gives the option of selling individual pouches and “ALLOWING” us to build our own assortment. I mean, I’ve seen some that they put together in which fully 50%+ are fillers. NOT going very far during World War Z fortified with Chocolate Pudding etc………..! Every say 25 pouches comes in a free sealed storage bucket. It’s eminently do-able but they would have to fire all the jerks in “Marketing”. Here’s the only philosophy they need to follow—-“Give ME my moneys’ worth of the best product you can at a price level that gives YOU an acceptable return on your investment.” Period! If they CAN’T do that then they need to get into another business. But I digress. Thank God people like YOU can analyze and distill information down to the important stuff then publish it in an easy to understand format. You and yours, Stay Safe.
Thank you Mike. I really appreciate your praise. I also understand your frustration. As you say, it’s probably all in marketing. You could use Thrive Life to help with that problem, but they are not ready made meals. If you are thinking of purchasing ready made meals, I wanted to let you know that we have a $100 coupon for our readers given to us by My Patriot Supply. Here’s the link in case you want to check it out: http://www.prepwithmartin.com/. Again, thanks for leaving your comment! Now go enjoy your chocolate pudding! π€£
Julie, would you recommend the 4-Week Emergency
Food Supply from https://mypatriotsupply.com/pages/rs-mps-direct-prep-with-martin?rfsn=3768062.90eea1?
Hello Scott. In my opinion it’s really personal preference. I would suggest that you look at the contents carefully and decide if you like the foods in that packet. Rice, chicken, potatoes, noodles, etc. It is a super deal though! I did the math and it adds up to $0.35 per 1,000 calories. That being said, if you like the food choices they offer, go for it! π Hope this was helpful!
i went MY PATRIOT SUPPLY and now the price for 1 yr is 2900$ Are the gouging ? shouls I wait til this rona vyrus calms and hope the price falls to what she quoted?
Yes, I see the price has increased quite a bit. Actually, after checking, they seem to have all increased their prices. I guess if you’re not in any hurry I would wait till the demand isn’t so high before purchasing. I know they are trying very hard to fill orders but this virus is taking a toll on their supplies. Thanks for your comment.
Nice job Julie…… With a family of four, My wife and I are getting ready for the Coronavirus onslaught. I am in Arizona, not that populated, but I can see lots of uneducated people running to the grocery and buying everything up, once the “T-Virus” hits the fan (re: Resident Evil series, which is not far from reality), My brother is a Pathologist and keeps me up to date. He figures, worst case scenario, you’ll have to stay home for a few weeks and have at least 4-6 weeks of basic food. Keep salt, peanut butter, vitamins and freeze dried in the house. Keep medical supplies, cleaning supplies and buy N-100 cloth masks. Best to buy the 3M P100 masks with cartridges. Exceeds CDC guideline.Lots of Germ X in the car. Hand wash all the time. avoid busy shops, go off hours. Be a hermit if you can. People are STUPID and selfish, they will go out sick and contaminate everyone else. I have stocked up on Amoxicillin and inhalers. You got the point. Go to an ER or Urgent care? Your a dead man. Nobody is ready for the Coronavirus. Test the area, get a mask, then go food shopping: watch the evil looks. Good Luck…………………………wish I had more space to write what my brother told me. Useful info for educated people. Start to prepare…………..now.
Thanks for your long and comprehensive comment Russell. I would like to be more prepared than we are that’s for sure. You and your family sound like you’ve got things covered. If you don’t mind sharing, which food storage company are you using?
Russell,
I’m right there with you…. I’d like to know what your brother said?
are you in any prepper groups on FB?
My Patriot Supply is in the chart but not in 8 written about.
Thank you Matt. I’m sorry for the confusion. My Patriot Supply sold Patriot Pantry long term food storage options, which is detailed in #1. I contacted them and they told me they are in the process of repackaging their supplies but the ingredients are all the same. The new name is Ready Hour. I hope this helps clarify. If you have any more questions please let me know.
Thank you for the dedication to research and compile all if this information! I want to be more prepared for something like this in case it does get much worse. The most prepared I am is I have 50 packets of Ramen noodles. I don’t know if my family at home is keeping up to date on the statistics and reports of this virus, but I hope they can prepare more too. We do have a stock of canned vegetables and macaroni. I think this is the most prepared they are back home. My family is not that small, so I don’t know how long things will last there.
Canned food and dried noodles is a great start Jonathan. π It’s great you are thinking of your family back home as well. Helping them be more educated and aware of their options is very thoughtful of you. Maybe you could send them this article to help them start thinking of how they might be more prepared.
So far I have tried a couple of these companies. Now I mostly buy mountain house simply because the food really tastes good. Half the time I order to have just in case but the family ends up eating them.
It’s good your family likes them too! Do you keep any in bulk?
This is informative and nice article, thanks for sharing the important and educative article, Keep up the good work.
Thanks for your nice comment. Have you tried any of these companies?
