It was nice to find a hand-operated well pump that we could install by ourselves without a lot of hassle. Simple Pump made knowing what we needed and how to install it very painless and we are very pleased with the results.
Evaluation
Our first step was to fill out an online form so that Simple Pump could evaluate our specific needs. They needed basic information about our well such as where it is located, the static water level, freezing level for our area, etc. If you don’t know some of the answers they have a site to help you figure it all out. They also have an estimated pricing page if you want a ballpark figure.
After submitting our well stats we received an email with a customized quote.
Shipping and Packaging
Simple Pump shipped 2 packages to us by FedEx. One package weighed 101 pounds and the second only 14 pounds. These numbers are specific to the system they designed for our well. Our static water level is 90′, well depth of 520′ and our submersible is set at 200′. Because of this depth we were sent 14 9′ PVC drop pipes.
It was shipped in a sturdy large cardboard tube and box. We were impressed with the high quality packaging that was simple for two people to carry. The smaller parts were contained in plastic bags making them easy to identify and keep organized.
Instructions
Our Simple Pump came with a 27-page printed installation manual with pictures. Step-by-step instructions are detailed with critical points highlighted in red. The top drop pipe that we installed last was clearly marked with red tape.
There are small rod guides made of nylon that go in the center of the lift rod. We weren’t paying attention and forgot to put them in after already installing 6 drop pipes! Bummer. We pulled them back out and installed it correctly, not forgetting the rod guides this time.
Installation
From our experience installing our hand-operated Simple Pump was straightforward and successful. With the exception of overlooking the rod guides the installation went smooth. Watch our installation video here.
One vital accessory included in out kit was the safety tool. We placed this on the well cap after installing each new section of drop pipe to keep the whole system from falling into the well during the installation process! DON’T FORGET TO USE IT!
Because our well is so deep we ended up using the T-Handle Assembly Tool provided after about 8 drop pipes were installed. The system was getting pretty heavy and the T-Handle helped lower it down with more control.
Performance
Did it work? Oh yes!!! We tested in out immediately and hand pumped a 5 gallon bucket in 4 minutes. The pump arm moves smoothly and easily without a lot of tension. Both Marty and I can pump it without a lot of effort.
Having the peace of mind that we can get water when we need it without the necessity of electricity is very comforting.
Hope that this article is helpful to you if you are considering installing your own hand pump. Hope you have a great day and keepsm:)ing! – Julie
